In 1908 he entered the Moscow Higher Technical School (Moscow Higher Technical School), where under the guidance of Zhukovsky began to engage in aeronautical study, participated in the construction of a glider, which made its first flight. After graduation (1918), together with Zhukovsky was the organizer and one of the leaders of hydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI). In 1918 – 1935 Deputy Head of the Institute. In 1922 he formed as part of TsAGI and headed the experimental design bureau, whose activity was associated with the development of severe land, sea combat and civilian aircraft, torpedo boats and the sled. In 1922 – 1924 directed the work on implementation duralyumina in aircraft, in 1924 – 1925 created the ANT-2 and ANT-3 – the first Soviet all-metal aircraft. Using duralyumina in the construction of aircraft allowed Tupolev first in the country to move from biplane to monoplane cantilever. Tupolev developed more than 100 types of aircraft, 70 of which were issued serially. At the Tupolev aircraft won 78 world records, holds 28 unique flights, including rescue boat crew Cheliuskin on ANT-4, non-stop flights to the U.S. via the North Pole crew VPChkalov and Gromov on ANT -25, landing a scientific expedition "North Pole", headed by ID Papanin. A large number of bombers, torpedo bombers, scouts designed by Tupolev (TB-1, TB-3, SB, TB-7, MTB-2, W-2) and torpedo boats H-4, F-5 was used in the fighting in the Great Patriotic War of 1941 – 1945. In the postwar years under the leadership of Tupolev developed a number of military and civilian aircraft, including the 1-st Soviet jet bomber Tu-12 (1947), Tu-16, 1-th jet airliner TU-104 (1954), 1-st turboprop intercontinental airliner Tu-114 (1957), Tu-124, Tu-134, Tu-154. Created as a number of supersonic aircraft, including passenger Tu-144. Tupolev – Honorary Member of the Royal Aeronautical Society of Great Britain (1970) and the American Institute of Aviation and Space (1971). In 1958, Tupolev was awarded the Gold Medal.
