Shaganova Biography

Shaganov (died 11/08/1843) – hero of the Caucasian War, Major Tiflis Infantry Regiment, who died in Gergebile, in the capture of this fortress Shamil. Gergebilsky fortification was built by Lieutenant General Mills, consisted of two forts and defended by 2? rotami Tiflis Infantry Regiment (about 350) with five guns under the command of Major Shaganova. In 1843, 28 October, on the orders of Shamil large crowd of mountaineers took lying near the building Gergebil village, and the next day among the five thousand people a few times violently assaulted two of the fort, but were repulsed with heavy losses. After that, the castle himself arrived Shamil, and under his leadership storms have resumed, but always ended with the same result as the first, despite the terrible toll that carried the besieged. Last November 2 was barely over 200 men under arms. Because of this Shaganov on the night of November 3 cleared the upper fort, translated from the men and three guns in the lower fort. At the same abandoned fort was laid a mine blast which killed more than 300 mountaineers. After that, despite the frantic efforts of the mountaineers, the number of which amounted to 12 thousand men with five guns, seize the remaining fort Shaganov continued bravely to hold still for about a week, although the garrison was literally melted away, and November 8 in the morning he had been only 50 people under arms. On that day the enemy led the last desperate assault, and after strenuous efforts finally mastered the consolidation, after killing almost all of its defenders, of whom only two survived, and 25 officers of lower ranks.
