Biography of Mikhail Mikhailovich Gromov

Gromov, Mikhail (12 (24) .02.1899), Colonel-General (1944), Hero of the Soviet Union (28.9. 1934), Distinguished Pilot USSR, Professor (1937). Tsp. CPSU since 1941. Born in a family physician. He graduated from the theoretical courses it. Zhukovsky at the Higher Technical School (1917). Since 1918 in the Soviet Army, he graduated from Pilot School (1918) and participated in the Civil War on the Eastern Front. After the war he was an instructor-pilot and test pilot. In 1934, for establishing a world distance record for a closed curve at a distance of over 12 thousand km was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. In 1937, together with AB Yumashev and SA Danilin flew Moscow – North Pole – the United States. In 1940 – 1941 Chief of Flight Research Institute. Since December 1941 participated in WWII as a commander of an air division (before Feb. 1942), Air Force commander of the Kalinin Front (Feb. – May 1942), commander of the 3rd (until May 1943) and the 1 st (to June 1944) air armies. From July 1944 Head of training front-line aircraft, since 1946 deputy. Commander of the long-range aircraft. Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR 1 st and 2 nd convocation. He was awarded three Orders of Lenin, four Orders of the Red Banner, Order of Suvorov 2 nd degree and World War 1 st degree, 3 orders of Red Star and medals. Gromov – the first Soviet pilots to be awarded the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) – Medal de Lavaux (1937).
